Churchgoers buzzed around Mount Pleasant’s Community Church before the 9 a.m. service on Easter Sunday. It was, in most ways, a traditional Sunday service — except for the black wading pool to the left of the stage.
On April 17, 29 members of Community Church were baptized. Those baptized ranged from grade-schoolers to adults, including Central Michigan University junior Taylor Idema.
Idema was first baptized as an infant. Now, she’s chosen to get baptized again.
“I’ve just been really taking my faith seriously recently,” Idema said. “(Baptism) is just something I’ve been waiting for a long time to do, so I’m happy to finally be able to do it.”
Idema works at the church, and she says this has brought her closer to her faith — making the choice to get baptized a no-brainer.
She said it was a bonus that the baptism would take place on Easter, her favorite holiday.
“I love the joy that comes with Easter,” Idema said. “I love that (my congregation) just gets to come together and celebrate what Christianity really is.”
Community Church Teaching Pastor Wally Hostetter said there was an intense connection between Easter Sunday and baptism.
“Baptism is part of the response that we have as believers in Christ,” Hostetter said. “It really fits into Resurrection Sunday because you are buried with (Jesus) in baptism, and you are raised with Him to the newness of life.”
Idema said that those interested in getting baptized should talk to a Christian mentor in their life to see if it’s right for them.
“(Baptism) is just a way to publicly declare your faith in Jesus,” Idema said. “If that’s something you want to do, then by all means, do it.”
